GM cutting US production amid chip shortage

General Motors Co. reported on Thursday it is reducing its production in the United States due to the global semiconductor chip shortage.

Manufacturing facilities in Spring Hill, Tennessee and Lansing, Michigan will be closed from April 23 and 19 respectively, while Kansas-based plants will extend their downtime until mid-May. Sites in Canada and Mexico are also affected.

“We continue to work closely with our supply base to find solutions for our suppliers’ semiconductor requirements and to mitigate impact on GM. Our intent is to make up as much production lost at these plants as possible,” the company told CNBC in an emailed statement.
