Goldman Sachs Group Inc. and JPMorgan Chase & Co. Begin Earnings SeasonWall Street before this morning’s signal. Although the revenue of the big banks is expected to fall,pulled down by a drop in trade, an increase in trading ratescan reduce the size of the impact on your bottom line. There was mixed newsfor European bank shareholders, with the Bank of England saying there wasfully removed the limits on dividends, while the ECB signaled that it couldtake steps to ensure creditors avoid overpayments when thelimit is likely raised later this year.
Needed boost
The International Energy Agency has warned that global oil markets should“narrow significantly” unless there is an increase in production. With OPECand its allies failing to reach an agreement on production, and with fewsigns of movement in time to allow an increase in August, oil inventoriesshould fall further below average levels. At the market this morning, the barrel of the WestTexas Intermediate for August delivery was trading at $74.74
Price increases
There is likely to be something for both sides of the inflation debate in the CPI numberof today. The “transient” field will be pleased to see a small drop in the pace ofPrice Rises – Should Economists’ Predictions of Today’s Datashow correct – while those worried about persistent inflation will point outfor the continuation of a very high level of price growth. the median ofEstimates for the total number dropped to 4.9% in June as core inflation rose.to 4%. Mixed markets
Global stock meters are mostly pretty “silent” before the dataof profits and inflation. Overnight, the MSCI Asia Pacific index rose 0.8%, whileJapan’s Topix index closed 0.7% higher, with equities in the region boostingfor a recovery in Chinese technology companies. In Europe, the Stoxx 600 Indexremained virtually unchanged at 6:50 am as telecommunications stocks rose.by Nokia Oyj’s strong results.
