Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador says US President Joe Biden’s immigration policy is\u00a0encouraging illegal immigration, and brings revenue to drug cartels through human trafficking operations at the US border<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

According to the\u00a0Reuters<\/em><\/a>, Mexico has asked the Biden administration to assist by providing developmental help to Central America, where tens of thousands of migrants embark on a journey through Mexico in the hopes of reaching the United States and gaining asylum.<\/p>\n

“They see him as the migrant president, and so many feel they\u2019re going to reach the United States<\/strong>,” said AMLO (via\u00a0Reuters<\/em><\/a>) following a March 1 virtual meeting with Biden. “We need to work together to regulate the flow, because this business can\u2019t be tackled from one day to the next.”<\/p>\n

Some of Biden\u2019s policies that\u00a0worry the Mexican government<\/strong>\u00a0include a\u00a0fast track to citizenship<\/strong>\u00a0for migrants living in the US and support for gang violence victims.<\/em><\/p>\n

Internal assessments reviewed by Reuters \u2014 based on testimony and intelligence gathering \u2014 state that\u00a0Mexican gangs have been growing their clientele and keeping tabs on US measures that would encourage migration<\/strong>. Additionally they have developed a new tracking system to move migrants across the US-Mexico border.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

One anonymous Mexican official told\u00a0Reuters<\/em>\u00a0that\u00a0cartels have been using sophisticated smuggling techniques “from the day Biden took office,”\u00a0<\/strong>such as using technology to thwart authorities, making smuggling operations appear as travel agencies, and keeping migrants up to date on the latest immigration rules.<\/p>\n

“Migrants have become a commodity,” the official told\u00a0Reuters<\/em>. “But if a packet of drugs is lost in the sea, it\u2019s gone. If migrants are lost, it\u2019s human beings we\u2019re talking about.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
